hi Mr Howard, as a christian Aboriginal what do you intend to replace my people with after all that youve take
I am aware of the scripture “to come under authority” with those who govern us but I am also aware of the trauma that is created when someone who doesnt understand real life issues that causes death and poverty and long term disadvantages due to lack of understanding and misrepresentation of the scripture that Christ promotes. If you are fair dinkum in wanting to help Aboriginal People in this country then do for others what you would want them to do for you.I believe you need to provide long term counselling for communities where there has been major crisis, practical hands on activities that will replace cdep work with real jobs like arts and crafts linked in with tourism.Plenty of cultural awareness training for Councils and non aboriginal members of the community.Christian groups to be more active in some programmes to help with family life and encourage aboriginal leaders to take up leadership in their homes and community with work.
I agree, I have lived in aboriginal and islander communitys for half my life and have seen all sides of the picture, the problem is get away from the community and the public perception of aboriginal is less than flattering.
Why is it so, personally I can understand that view when you see groups of aboriginal children (strangely i have never seen children of any other background perhaps this a false cross section but maybe not) sniffing paint on the local trains and harrising other train passengers.
Like all cross sections of society these days there is a tendancy to rely on welfare rather than working to get ahead, this is especially true in the city, and while cdep works where communities have the need for community based employment (comuunity gardens etc) more often than not the system can not handle the majority of the population all vieing for the jobs that would be suitable for full time roles for a handfull of the community, anyway my point is that there needs to be more onus on generating wealth within the community, be it as you say by tourism based services (goods or otherwise) or projects involving farming etc.
Personally I have seen the legislation work against supporting those communities trying to get on their feet and become self sufficent, that is the end aim isnt it?
I do having said that agree with howard that you cant just throw money at the problem that isnt the solution, more education and co-operation with tribal elders to ensure all within the community conduct themselves with moral and ethical standards that can apply across the cross section of australia. Frankly I wouldnt be against tribal justice either, the youth need to show the elders respect and tow the line actaully apply that to everyone, what is it with the world today!
Anyway thanks for the rant and good luck with getting it further
cheers
