Adelaide one of the most vibrant cities in Australia

Because South Australia is so well known for its world renowned wine growing regions like the Barossa Valley, this is naturally what comes to mind first when Adelaide, SA’s capital, is mentioned. However, those who live in Adelaide or have visited there think of SA’s capital city as one of the top cultural centers in Australia and a great jumping off point for exploring all the wonders of South Australia.

When you arrive in Adelaide, the first place you are likely to go is Rundle Street. Steeped in culture, both historic and contemporary, Rundle Street is the perfect place to feel the pulse of Adelaide. Settle down in a curbside café and relax with a gourmet lunch and a glass of local wine. Relax and watch the world go by for a little while before you set out on your exploration of the city.

Rundle Street changes pace at night and becomes a vibrant center for Adelaide nightlife. On any night of the week, you can take in a movie at a cosy, intimate cinema, enjoy a gourmet meal, watch a live band at a local pub or do it all in a single evening. Rundle Street is where the locals gather at night, so when you’re out on the town here, you are likely to make some new friends.

If you’re new to Adelaide (or even if you’re not), get to know the city better by spending a day in the historical North Terrace district. Wander around for awhile just taking in the sights. It’s a beautiful area peppered with classic examples of period architecture, statues and lovely gardens. Try not to get too distracted on your first visit. The street is only one mile (1.6 kilometers) long, so your stroll won’t take too long.

As you walk along North Terrace, you are sure to be distracted by something and will just have to take a “quick look” at what’s inside. It might be Parliament House at the north end of the street or it might be the splendid Anglican Holy Trinity Church, built in 1838, not long after the first European settlers arrived in Adelaide.

If you wander into the South Australian Museum, don’t expect to come out any time soon. There is so much to see and learn there, you will want to give yourself plenty of time. This museum is well known for its fine art collections, ranging from exquisite Aboriginal art to cutting edge Contemporary Art. It is also the perfect place to go if you want to learn about South Australia’s fascinating history.

Since you’ve already gone out of your way to visit Adelaide, go a little further and visit Kangaroo Island. Kangaroo Island is a bit of a hike from Adelaide: it takes about an hour and a half by road to get to the Kangaroo Island Sealink, but it’s a beautiful drive through the Southern Vales wine district. The island itself is the 4th largest in Australia and is a largely protected wilderness. Many animal species there can no longer be seen on the Australian mainland.

Choose your Adelaide accommodation carefully, because you’re not going to be able to tear yourself away from Adelaide once you’re there. Adelaide has so much to offer, you don’t want to limit your time there if you can help it. Enjoy it while you can!
