If your traveling from an visual arts background to phycology?
I need to make out a clear answer. It may include combining two difinite answers.
Like a log stretching across a waterfall, the two ends of the log are touching to rocks/cliffs to form a crossing for animals. I recognize those two ends of the log, but want to join two culture together as the truth of me, so others may seek refudge fromwhat is destroying the difintie “one & other”.
What do suggest for a visual artist to paint? What would a visual artist paint if he spoke the language of phycology for the healing of hate and distruction, between two difinite answers(people are forced to choice to be)?
stretched across to two difinite answers (Pure European & Pure Aboriginal).
Art was once used as a mental medicine in the native cultures of north america. Phycology is relitivaly close to the cultural difinition of aboriginal shaman. How would I create a new systematic school combining teaching/healing/
“Wouldn’t it be great…” You’re an artist and you want to be like an aboriginal shaman who creates a visual display so magical and powerful that it causes psychological healing.
The thing is, most people with psychological disorders have ingrained behavior patterns that cause them problems. The therapy is to help them build new patterns. Would you create an artwork that helps everyone everywhere? Or would you create a new, targeted artwork for each patient? My God, I imagine your fees would be enormous, considering the time involved!
It takes an amazing amount of work to change a behavior pattern. The patient has to repeat the new, more effective behavior pattern many, many times…usually for many months…before the dendrites on the neurons interconnect into a brand new neural pathway that enables the improved behavior pattern. Can you create an artwork that will make a patient do that? Don’t ask me…I’m asking YOU, the artist…you’re the one who’ll have to do it.
Now if the PATIENT creates the artwork, that’s a different matter. Called art therapy, the activity can help engage both sides of the patient’s brain to visual the problem pattern as well as the new pattern. This holistic engagement in the change process often has good results.
Anyway, I took your question seriously, which no one else did. It IS an interesting question. Have you read the first four books of the Carlos Castaneda series? In it, a troubled intellectual is mentored by a Mexican Indian shaman, who adopts him as an apprentice and tries to make him an effective, powerful human being using structured experiential teaching. The process took several years.
