Any good Art galleries in Melbourne Australia?

Will be there soon and need to check out get some paintings

All sorts, modern- aborigines etc

If you’re looking for art in Melbourne, you should most definitely visit the “Arts precinct” – roughly definied as south of the CBD from Federation Square’s Ian Potter Centre of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), encompassing Southbank, the Arts Centre (generally reserved for live acts), National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) International (this is the building with the giant water-wall out the front) right down to the Victorian College of the Arts. It’s also a beautiful spot of Melbourne with the botanical gardens over the road.

The NGV Ian Poter Centre has a permenant Indigenous and Australian collection on show, and is absolutely free to view every day of the year. Other exhibits at the NGV Ian Potter and International Galleries may have a small charge to cover costs – but are generally well worth it.

If you’re looking for something a little more “trendy” or “modern” you might like to have a look at some of the private galleries off Brunswick Street, Gertrude Street and Smith Street in Fitzroy, Collingwood and Abbotsford (north of the CBD). Also have a look around St. Kilda and Prahran (further south of the Arts precinct).

If you’re willing to travel even further out, you can find the inspiration for the Heidelburg School artists at the Hiede Museum of Art in Bulleen and the Heidelburg Artists Trail, both in Melbourne’s east (about a twenty minute drive out of Melbourne’s city centre).
